Pascoe and Company has recently acquired some very rare figurines which were used to illustrate the Royal Doulton Figures book. This is the first time they have been on the market for over 30 years and in many cases only one example has ever been found. Some wonderful colorways were not discovered in time for the publication of the Figures Book and they are recorded here for the first time.

Charles Vyse

Darling

Charles Vyse was responsible for the first Royal Doulton figure, Darling HN1, and his street vendors inspired he balloon and flower sellers popularized by Doulton. However, few collectors are familiar with his independent studio work which has been sought after by connoisseurs since the 1920s.

Vyse’s father, Charles senior, worked as an engraver at Doulton’s Burslem factory for many years and he arranged for Charles junior to be apprenticed as a modeler in 1896. Read the rest of this entry »

Over the years we have worked with Royal Doulton, Moorcroft, Dennis Chinaworks and Andrew Hull and more recently our own Connoisseur Collection. Our figure of Pope John Paul II, commissioned from Royal Doulton a few years ago, is now back in the news again since the announcement of the beatification of His Holiness on May 1st. Dennis Chinaworks – Frocks to Pots

Sally Tuffin

Sally Tuffin was a famous fashion designer in the swinging sixties with a boutique off Carnaby Street in London. She switched from making frocks to designing pots in the 1980s and used her expertise with dress making patterns to create ‘outfits’ for vases. After helping to revitalize the Moorcroft Pottery, she turned her attention to her own ‘label’ and for the last ten years she has concentrated on designing for the Dennis Chinaworks. Each year, she also launches a collection of unique new designs at Bonhams in London and they are acquired by collectors for thousands of pounds each.

The Martin Brothers

Martin Brothers Bird

The Martin Brothers were a family of Victorian potters famous for their bird jars and other grotesques. Two of the Martin brothers worked briefly at the Doulton Pottery alongside George Tinworth, and they used similar stoneware decorating techniques. Their bird jars were caricatures of famous politicians and church leaders in the late 19th century and they are avidly sought after by Martin Ware collectors today.

The city of Stoke-on-Trent in the heart of England has been the center of the British ceramics industry since the 1700s. Generations of craftsmen have handed down their expertise over the centuries and these skills are celebrated today in the hands of ceramic artists such as Dave Capewell, Peter Harrison and Andrew Hull. All are demonstrating their specialized techniques at the Florida Antiques & Gift Expo from January 28-30, 2011 so don’t miss this opportunity to watch artistry in action.

Ethel Sleigh and Phyllis Simpson established the Old Cheyne Pottery in Chelsea in 1922 and became members of the Potter’s Guild together with their neighbor, Charles Vyse. Charles and Nell Vyse – Independent Artists

Charles Vyse was born in the Potteries and served his apprenticeship at Doulton before moving to London to study sculpture. He contributed several designs for the early HN collection including Darling HN1. Following his marriage, Vyse set up his own studio pottery in the Chelsea area of London with his wife, Nell. Throughout the 1920s, they made a wide range of character figures in very limited numbers for sale at art exhibitions.
